Urinary incontinence in women

Urinary incontinence is a common urologic condition affecting women. While it can also occur in men, typically due to neurogenic bladder or prostate-related issues, it is far more prevalent in females.

There are several types of urinary incontinence, which is why consulting a urologist or incontinence specialist is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

It is not uncommon for women in their late 30s and beyond, especially those who have had children, to experience urinary incontinence. Additional risk factors include a high body mass index (BMI) or obesity.

To determine the underlying cause, a urologic specialist will take a thorough medical history, perform a physical examination, and use diagnostic tools such as urodynamic testing. This evaluation helps guide the most appropriate treatment plan.

For some women, surgical options may be considered, particularly if urinary incontinence is interfering with daily life or affecting personal relationships. Treatment is available and can significantly improve both function and quality of life.
